James LaCount family papers, 1876-1903 [manuscript].

Collection contains two account ledgers. The first ledger (1893-1902) covers LaCount's activities as an agent, purchasing mining materials from Staple & Fancy Groceries, Holmes; and Quinn & Gorman, Groceries & Mining Supplies in Gunnison, Colo. The second ledger (1876-1880) contains family correspondence between, among others, Marie LaCount, daughter Lola LaCount, and J.W. Christy.

James LaCount was born in N.Y. in 1831. During the Civil War he was a member of the 5th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. Later, he lived with his family for a time in Linn County, Kan. before moving to Colo. At the turn of the 20th century, James LaCount worked as a miner and provider of mining equipment in Gunnison, Colo., while his wife, Marie LaCount, was in Leadville, Colo. Dallas was born in 1939 in Washington, D.C., but later moved with her family to Denver, Colo. in 1945. She is a graduate of the University of Denver, receiving a B.A. in Journalism. In 1961, she joined Business Week. Later she was promoted to Denver Bureau Chief in 1969, becoming the first female Bureau Chief for a national news magazine.
